| Details: This live on-campus position supports the Student Life Office in meeting goals and assisting the Director of Residence Life in assuring the successful functioning of the Residence Life Department through campus programs that foster an educational environment consistent with the academic and educational mission of the University. Goals: A) Assist the Director of Residence Life in creating, implementing, and evaluating programs that assist in the retention of residential students. B) Promote the development of a community environment within the residence halls, student suites, and student apartments characterized by consideration, respect and appreciation of others. C) Promote the development of an environment conducive to academic endeavors and achievement. D) Promote the development of an environment conducive to student involvement and participation. E) Encourage the development of students’ leadership skills. F) Assist students, whenever possible, to identify and work toward attaining personal academic goals. G) Foster and pursue care and maintenance of the physical facilities for the comfort, health, and safety of all residents. Essential Functions of Job: Administrative: 1. Supervise residence life student staff within a designated area of on-campus housing. 2. Assist in the selection, training, and evaluating of Resident Assistants and other student employees in the residence halls and in conjunction with campus-wide programs. 3. Assist in promoting and developing management procedures and practices that preserve and enhance the physical plant. 4. Assist the Director of Residence Life in judicial matters by investigating incidents, meeting with students, and assuming designated roles in the judicial process. 5. Communicate, explain, and enforce procedures, rules and regulations of the University with regard to residents and student staff. 6. Assist the Director of Residence Life in opening and closing the hall at the beginning and end of each academic year, and during periods of academic recess. 7. Student Development: 1. Provide support and assistance with academic success of residential students through intentional positive intervention and programming. 2. Initiate and maintain activities of a student development nature utilizing the wellness model. 3. In conjunction with the resident assistants, work with residents on individual development issues and make referrals as appropriate. Provide assistance to students in developing their interests and abilities. 4. Work with staff and students to develop community in the hall and on individual floors. 5. Assist in coordinating the efforts of the Residence Hall Association and student staff toward obtaining specific residence hall objectives. 6. Provide residential activities that will allow students to engage in community and determine what makes them “come alive". 7. Other duties as needed. Departmental: 1. Serve on departmental committees as interested and available. 2. Assume on-duty responsibilities for the campus as described by the Director of Residence Life. 3. Initiate and maintain effective communication with other members of the Residence Life Staff and Student Life Staff in implementing departmental and divisional objectives. 4. Initiate and maintain cooperative relations with the Campus Security, Auxiliary Services (in particular Dining Services), and other administrative and academic departments. 5. Graduate Assistant Hall Directors also have responsibilities in campus life areas such as Leadership, Service Learning and New Student Programs, Viking Brigade, Intramurals, or Academic and Career Center. SUPERVISION:The Graduate Assistant Hall Director is responsible for duties assigned by the Director of Residence Life, Program Director for area of focus, and his/her designees. The Graduate Assistant Hall Director’s immediate supervisor is the Director of Residential Life. The Graduate Assistant Hall Director job description and manual are the basis for performance review and evaluation. Failure to fulfill required job expectations in a satisfactory manner or violation of University policy or rules governing residence halls will be grounds for the termination of a Graduate Assistant Hall Director. Working Conditions: 1. The term of employment is twelve pay periods. The Graduate Assistant Hall Director is not obligated during periods of academic recess; however, he/she is expected to be available for duties related to the opening and closing of buildings for all recess periods. The assistantship is for a maximum of three years, contingent upon acceptable performance in the position. 2. The Graduate Assistant Hall Director position is two distinct experiences with both receiving equal priority. The first experience is in the Student Life Office fulfilling the responsibilities described in the Personalized Areas of Focus and Campus Life Focus Area. The G.A. will be required to work approximately twenty-five hours per week in the Student Life Office fulfilling these duties. The second experience is the residence life component of the position. It is expected that the Graduate Assistant Hall Director will be regularly available to residents and respond to crisis situations or emergencies and assist as necessary. The Graduate Assistant Hall Director will be responsible for all residential responsibilities listed in the Administrative, Student Development and Departmental sections of this job description. 3. This is a live-in position. Occupancy of the apartment is for the term of appointment. Check-in and check-out of the apartment should be arranged with the Director of Residence Life. In accordance with the department’s pet policy, no pets are allowed. 4. The Graduate Assistant Hall Director summer duty coverage will consist of, but not limited to: tasks associated with conferences; summer transitions and cleaning; staff recruitment and other summer work in the Student Life Office; regular availability and supervision in the building when it is occupied; other duties as assigned. 5.
